Wonder Woman 1984
Patty Jenkins surprised many people with her direction in Wonder Woman (2017). The DC universe was a complete disaster with failures like Batman vs Superman, but Wonder Woman was pretty fun, entertaining and it proved many to be wrong about the future of DC cinematographic universe. The second part arrived in 2020 with the pandemic of Covid-19 and the majority of the cinemas being closed. Many great films postponed their premiers in cinemas to 2021 (let’s see if its true), but Wonder Woman didn’t, and it was available in HBO. Together with Tenet, it was supposed to be the films that could save the industry in 2020, in my opinion Tenet did it, unfortunately Wonder Woman 1984 no. I like Patty Jenkins, I think she’s very talented but my problems with this film is the plot and their intentions. First I want to highlight the strong points: the photography is really great and colourful, the direction of the action scenes is clear and well-filmed (despite there is too much CGI and lack of action in the movie), the cast is enjoyable and the music I think is perfect for a superhero film. All these things are expected to be good due to the budget, but what borders me is the script. First the film is 2h30m long, I don’t have any problem with it, however the film has very boring parts due to a few things: the lack of action (and when there's action it's not too intense even if it’s good filmed), some parts of the plot are very similar like in the first Wonder Woman, and it focuses on subplots that aren’t that interesting, those that kept me entreating are just explained too abruptly. Another problem that I have is that it tries to be deep and have a message, but I found it too forced as well as the humour. Also, there’s too much exposition to explain the philosophical argument (when that happens is a signal of bad writing). To sum up Wonder Woman 1984 has good ideas, looks great and it tries to be different, but the plot and duration of the film ended with a movie that could be much more fun.
