The Wailing (Goksung)

Goksung [The Wailing], de Na Hong-jin (2016) – Sonia Unleashed
The Wailing was one of the biggest sensations in the Cannes Festival in 2016, which is understandable/predictable, as it is a great film. First, it is a fantastic looking movie, the camera moves combined with the brutal images make the movie beautiful and at the same time terrifying. Also, the interpretations are great. But what I like even more is the continuous changing of genres inside the film: The first act the film is like a serial killer, the characters make jokes and at that moment you think this film is the typical police investigation of a serial killer, but as Korean always do, the movie changes and in the second act, it consists on the investigation of a demon and paranormal activities, and finally in the third act, it changes again becoming a battle of demons and angels for the possession of a girl. Another great point that this film has is that there are scenes you won’t understand until the movie ends, this gives you an uncomfortable sensation all the time. That combined with the plot-twists is very suspenseful. Despite all the greatness, I found it to long and sometimes I didn’t feel any sympathy or fear for what could happen to the main character and his family. Maybe with more horror/terror scenes, it would help the movie to take it more seriously. Punctuation: 4/5
