War of the Worlds

| War of the Worlds is one of the Spielberg films that separate opinions, some critics say it is his worst film, while others disagree. I'm going to defend the film because I really like it and I consider all the criticism it has is unfair. First of all, this movie has problems, the motivations of some characters especially of the older son are weak, there is not enough explanation of why he decides to fight or why he hates his father... I feel that with a few more scenes between the Father (Tom Cruise) and his children exploring that relationship would have helped to sympathize more and understand the psychology of this unstructured family... Also, the ending is poorly executed, I like how it ends but not how it has been made. But let's see the positive points: the first 60 minutes are very impressive, great filming by Spielberg with long movement shots, there's no time to calm down for our characters. All the action we see is the action our characters see, there's no plane fight of army stuff, this technique makes the film more intense and real. Also, the special effects still look great. Once the first 60 minutes have passed, the film is less impactful, maybe because it becomes more predictable but it's still a great action movie. It's easy to trash this film, to accuse to be the typical American action movie. It is an invasion alien movie, the only purpose of Spielberg is to make us have fun watching it and for me, it has succeeded. At this time it is the best alien invasion film and no way it's Spielberg's worst. It's very close to getting a 4/5 Punctuation: 3/5 |
